Our story begins with facing infertility. After we married, we moved to Michigan, far away from our family in the South. We wanted to have kids right away, but it just didn’t happen. We talked a lot about adoption as a possibility—we were very open to the idea—but we (especially Sean) had a sense of fear around it whenever we thought of it. Right around that time, I (Sean) was working with a woman who went through an adoption where she had to give the baby back. Everything worked out the way it was supposed to, but watching her go through that brought the realities of adoption home to us. Considering opening yourself up that kind of pain is truly daunting. It’s a huge leap of faith.
